Ai

Harmony.

Ai-Hanmi

Uke and Nage stand facing each other with the same size forward, i.e. left side to the left side and right to right

Aikido

Ai-Ki-Do - A modern budo, harmonizing opposites and oneself with the ki of the universe; the way of cultivating one's unified body, mind, and spirit through training in the forms of physical combat, including techniques against weapons.

Aikidoka

One who practices aikido.

Aikikai

The name of any school in which the senior instructor is at least Sandan (3rd degree).

Ashi

Leg or foot.

Atemi

Blow or strike to distract, to imbalance, or to cause injury.

Iaido

A highly ritualized, defensive, and noncompetitive form of Kendo.

Ikkyo

The most basic way of gripping an opponent's arm; an arm bar technique with the elbow rotated forward.

Irimi

An entering motion, straight in, just of the line of attack, bringing nage close to uke, from where nage can get behind.

Irimi nage

A throwing technique done from an irimi movement.

Kaeshiwaza

Counter techniques.  Uke applies technique to nage.

Kaitenage

A throw, which turns uke like a wheel.  Implemented by holding uke's head down and rotating the arm forward, diagonally, and over the back.

Kamae

Posture.

Kamiza

Literally, place of god.  The "upper seat" usually identified by a raised dais, and typical emblems on display, such as picture of O-Sensei and a flower.  Also called shomen.

Kata

Shoulder; also a series of movements, often with jo or ken.

Katame

Lock or pin.

Katana

A Japanese sword.

Katatetori

An attack - one hand grab to the wrist.

Breathing methods using energy emanating from abdomen.

"The way of the gods."  A principle religion of Japan with emphasis on the worship of nature and ancestral lineage.

Shomen

Front or top of the head; also a designated wall where participants bow before and after practice, often with picture of O-Sensei.

Shomen uchi

Strike to forehead.

Shomen uchi undo

High parry; raise the hands to form a triangle in front of the face while shifting the weight forward, then drop the hands back to the sides while shifting the weight back.

Soto

Outside.

Soto kaiten

Outside turning technique.

Suwari waza

Attacks and techniques done from kneeling position.

A sword, usually longer than the katana, often secured on back, especially when on horseback.

[Dow] Literally "the way."  The philosophy of the way of the nature and universe expounded by Lao Tsu.  One of the sources of Zen, this deep and seemingly paradoxical "way of living harmoniously" is the "do" of many martial arts, in which fluidity, simplicity, and cooperation with the nature and universe as superior forces are taught as the way of bringing them to one's advantage.

Heaven and Earth throw.  Throw with one hand stretching up and the other reaching down earthward.

Tekubi kosa undo

Crossing the wrists at the one-point and in front of the face.

Tekubi shindo undo

Shaking off the hands exercise.

Grab or hold.

Tsuki

Thrust or punch.

Uchi kaiten

An inside turning motion.

Ude

Arm.

Uke

One who attacks nage and becomes the recipient of nage's strategy of defense.

Ukemi

The art of rolling, tumbling, break-falling, as well as the art of receiving ki from the nage.

Undo

Exercise.

Ura

Based on tenkan movements that bring nage's position behind uke.

Ushiro

Back or backwards.

Ushiro dori undo

Forward extension; step to the front, turning sideways while raising the arms, and tilt the leading side towards the floor in a side-bow.

Ushiro kubi shime

Choke from behind with free hand grabbing wrist.

Ushiro ryokata tori

Both shoulders grabbed from behind.

Ushiro tekubi tori

Both wrists grabbed from behind.

Ushiro waza

Any technique applied to an attack from behind.
